Fellows and Fellow Travelers: First off, I want to thank you for the seriousness and energy you brought to our work last weekend with the Chicano Messengers of Spoken Word. They were most pleased and satisfied, to say the least. I would add that Saturday morning's discussion was one of the best I have been part of in my 25 years at Macalester. Thanks for showing up, bringing your stuff into the room, being brave about being vulnerable, and more. Second, I want to remind you about the two great opportunities to expand our horizons on Thursday (tomorrow). At 11:45 in H 401, courtesy of American Studies, Professor Theo Gonzalves of the University Hawaii, Manoa, will present on "Stage Presence: Conversations with Filipino American Performing Artists." Lunch provided, if you show up early enough. Then, at 6:30 in the evening in the Smail Gallery in Olin Rice, Professor Gonzalves will join Lou Bellamy, the counding artistic director of Penumbra Theater, and Roger and DeAnna Cummings, the co-founders of Juxtaposition Arts, in a Globalization Cafe. This is an outstanding opportunity for all of us. And, again, there will be food. Third, I suspect we are now all thoroughly jazzed about seeing the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Walker, inspired and informed by Professor Godollei's wonderful presentation in the seminar today. Unfortunately, the logistics have gotten complicated. I have several offers to make -- If you want to go on your own, bring me your ticket ($6) and I will pay you back. If you want to go with me, I propose next Tuesday afternoon, November 20. Let's leave at 1PM and plan to be back on campus by 3:30PM. Do I have any takers? Please let me know so I can plan accordingly. I am open to another attempt on Friday or Saturday, November 23 and 24. It being Thanksgiving weekend, the gallery might be jammed, but I suggest getting there when the doors open at 10AM. Will any of you be around? Are you interested? Looking down the road, but coming up soon -- Wednesday evening, December 5, an outing to the Casket Arts Gallery for the "Nuestra Frida" show and panel discussion, featuring Professor Godollei and former Hispanic Studies Professor Juanita Garciagodoy. The very next night, Thursday, December 6, we will be going to see the incredible Danny Hoch, performing an in-process one man piece, at the Playwrights' Center. I have a limited number of tickets for that event, and I will be asking for RSVPs right after Thanksgiving. Whew! Love and Solidarity, Peter
