For many years, I did not understand the Dummies concept. Several years ago,
as a publisher, I started a line of computer books called 'In Plain
English.' We published IN PLAIN ENGLISH: DOS, IN PLAIN ENGLISH: WINDOWS 3.1,
etc. Part of our advertising (I came up with the slogan<g>) was 'We don't
call you an idiot or a dummy, we explain!' Naturally, like all the myriad of
other publishers who tried to compete againist the Dummies idea, we got our
plow cleaned and they ate our lunch, to mix American Southern mountain
metaphors.
So, in the great tradition of pragmatism worldwide, if you can't beat them,
join them. Maybe they got something good for lunch!
Seriously, have been on the inside now of doing a Dummies book, I am quite
impressed by the professionalism and the length to which they encourage
authors to do comprehensive books on the subject. In all, it was both a very
enjoyable and satisfying project.
