Last year the W2K News email newsletter changed from HTML to text and there was a massive backlash from the readers, after which the publishers made the format optional. After this cock up they polled the readership for their preferences and the majority wanted HTML, but unfortunately I can't find the poll results.

I don't have any figures for marketing campaigns but it is my preference to receive some types of email (such as newsletters and promotions) from trusted sources in HTML format.

Is this just a generally accepted view, or has this been studied, with hard evidence and so on?

Not that I am suspicious, it's just that people are often told something is true, and they tell others and so on until it becomes a "generally accepted view".

I'd be keen to see data to support it.
