Thanks Andrew - that is my opinion as well, if I center the content with a main wrap it will then "open" to the major content on a smaller resolution - with the sidebar navigation being what isn't immediately available - which is still accessible without scrolling in either direction because the center content has textual links as well as a bread crumb navigation.

I would suggest that even if you design for larger than 800x600, that
the main site content fit within the smaller width, it doesn't matter
too much about extra bits of content at the sides. If you look at the
various design blogs, many have a width of 1000px, but the actual blog
entry text fits easily within a width of 800px.
