Math (a2), square units (km2), chemistry formulas (Na2CO3) ... however ... I see it more as an <exponent|index|agent|factor /> (metaphorically, if you know what I mean) than simply <sup|sub /> but at least there's a tool for marking up that difference in a document. Theoretically, would you like it more if it were called <indexsomething />?
