A while back a client of ours decided they wanted an RSS feed for their news site, and as we were using a Plone setup we were happy to just switch on the existing folder syndication tools... Turns out they're fundamentally a bit stupid, and completely opaque.
So I'm in the same boat of looking for methods of generating a feed (this is after resolving to give up on the incredibly disparate and badly-communicative Plone community).
