I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the standards use of the <map> and <area> tags (like I'm doing here on the 2007 image of the left column: http://www.heliosdg.com/mgcaf/)? I did some testing by turning images off in IE7 and Firefox but the alt tag data doesn't appear. Does that mean screen readers can't find the information? Would it be best to provide <a> tags below the mapped image in case the image doesn't load? I also googled for web standards and the map & area tags but didn't come up with much.
