Make sure that the checkboxes next to subscribe are selected when you click 
the save button. Otherwise, it may unsubscribe the user. Does the admin 
account have a valid email address?

It sounds like you are not running the latest trunk. There have been quite a 
few changes since then, which you may or may not want. You can see some of 
the changes here:

You may also want to update your listen product to the latest trunk, and 
verify if it works there. Just to check, you can create a new list, but if 
you want to use an existing list, there is a migration that you will need to 
run (make a backup of your database first, this permanently alters yours 
lists to work with the trunk). There is some information about the migration 
in the link above.
