Perhaps your email client has been set up with the wrong SMTP server - so that the sent mail doesn't go through your mail server at all but perhaps directly from your client host.

Either way, I can guarantee you that neither Binc IMAP nor uw-imap send
email. :-)

I think there was some confusion in my original post, and I apologize. I was sending messages from my mail reader through an authorized mail relay, but there was no record of having done so from qmail's point of view, which I thought to be decidedly strange.

I never intended to imply that I thought Binc (or Courier IMAP, or IMAP-UW) was actually taking the responsibility of speaking SMTP to the Internet. But this still didn't solve the question of phantom mail that gets sent but never actually logged by qmail.

You're right, it turns out that I was sending mail through one machine and checking the logs of another. A stupid mistake? You bet. It was a misconfiguration on my part in my mail reader. At first glance, it didn't become readily apparent since both of the mail relays involved run qmail and live on the same subnet.

Thanks for the pointers, and thanks for a great IMAP server.
