Something naturally had to go wrong :). The BSD boxes I usually test
compiling on were both down, but since none of the other platforms gave
any compile problems I took a chance.

Yes, removing the '-v' option is good, and all others out there can simply
remove the -v from 'rm' in all Makefile and Makefile.in to work around the 
problem.

This is an iterative process.. ;)
