Cool! I took it all the way and tested with Marc Crispin's MIME torture
test (torture-test.mbox) and a couple of other nightmare files out there.

These files have never worked perfectly before - we've had off-by-two
errors here and there. With this patch the files seem to be interpreted
correctly!

If you allow plain text authentication and disable STARTTLS
(--disable-starttls) on bincimap-up, then you should be able to see what
is happening with ethereal. But I guess there are other mutt users on this 
list who can do this test also :-).
