I've had a lot of luck with Xirrus Wifi Inspector for a pretty good overview of what's around. The problem with that is that it's only as good as the network adapter in my laptop, however.

I have this great little app on my phone which does detect AP's, displays signal strength (with sound as you get closer/further), shows channel usage & overlap , but I need something a little better, however, I'm not ready to fork out 4k just yet. tia
