Presuming they were shipped with substitute CRAM units.

We did, but these were going to customer sites, most of them didn’t. At least
this one it seemed. ☺

Speaking of 5 ¼” disks, we used to distribute software on them. We had a user
call in one day complaining that the installer was asking for Disk 3, but she
couldn’t get it in. When I asked about what seemed to be preventing her from
putting it in the drive, she responded that the drive was already full from the
first 2 disks, there wasn’t room for a 3rd.

We rewrote the installer prompts the next week to have the user remove disk X,
then insert disk Y.

If I hadn’t been on the phone I wouldn’t have believed it. You just can’t make
this stuff up.

Really nice lady back in about ’97 who had a laptop (they were almost suitcases
in the day, and expensive) @previousjob. But, she smoked two packs a day and
had three indoor cats. Took me about 1 ½ hours to take the keyboard apart and
get it completely cleaned (plus opening up enough to get to the fan).

For those of you old enough to remember 5 1/4” floppy drives with the door
(lever) you had to close, we had a call @previousjob to our help line as
someone couldn’t get their disk to read and it had all of their important
files. Tech taking the call asked all sorts of questions, including “and
you’re certain the door is closed”? Same person went out to the building the
person was in and immediately noticed the door wasn’t closed on the drive,
hence it can’t read the disk. They asked the person to show them what they are
doing, and they immediately got up and closed their office door.

Ever took apart a computer owned by a heavy smoker?

I invested in heavy duty latex gloves for that kind of thing. Got to the point
we would charge time for cleaning equipment.

and don't forget long hair pet owners that bring in extra pet hair on their
pants and shoes... less gets in the system on the desktop than on the floor.

I read, a long time ago, so don't have a reference for it, that for
every six inches off the floor, the amount of dust ingested by fans is
halved. I have seen PCs destroyed by dust on the motherboard. This
might be less of a problem now, with fanless PCs, but we also need to
consider rogue janitors with vacuum cleaners (ESD) and carpet cleaners
(water and cleaning fluid). I have seen PC destruction from both.

PCs do not belong on floors. They belong at or above desk level.
