When you are considering any of these products you’re going to have to look
at the catalogs that they supply and manage. You need then to map that to
your (or your customer’s) estate. I have not done this analysis for a
customer for some time but it has always seemed that there is no one
provider offering ALL of the coverage that any customer has needed. Knowing
that a supplier was open to adding new products would be very helpful to me.

Then we have the features. Certainly at the bottom end of the price bracket
you are seeing plain ol’ patching while as you move along the line you see a
whole bunch of features, some of which are useful and some not. Certainly
SolarWinds and Shavlik offer uninstallers out of the box while some others
do not and you may place a different value on these than others, while
Secunia has the online service which you are looking up to which you would
need to justify in the organisation.

There’s a place for each of these vendor types.

This is all good info – keep it coming!

I’ve always heard good things about PMPC, and it does seem like Shavlik and
others are really trying to sell more features than I need.

Ah, but how do you patch your entire software catalog costing $0.99 per host
once it is out there? You need a patching scanning solution for that . . .
. .

1$ per PC and year is good, but our entire software catalog comes in at 0.99
(Whoops, did I make that public now?) per-node so we are even cheaper! But
guess we don’t have to deal with the fiddling of updates… :)

If you are interested in our SCUP catalog, here’s a more little high level
info below:

The current list of applications (500 + unique updates, 50 + unique
applications) supported in our catalog full list can be founmd here:

Like Mike Linkey said in the thread that split, we are always open to adding
new applications for our customers. In fact, most applications requested by
our customers have been added to our SCUP catalog:

As far to release cadence, we typically are able to fully test and release
updates the same day the vendor releases the update (Even non-security
updates). Security specific updates are almost always released the same day
the vender releases the update. A full list of our catalog update history
can be found here:

Cost is 1 USD$ per managed client on an annual basis. For around 19,000
devices, it would be around $ 19,000 annually to subscribe to our catalog.

By far patchmypc is the cheapest and provides the same quality product as
the guys that cost 10x as much.

Subject: [mssms] Update Catalog for SCUP

Hey all,

I’m looking for recommendations for an update catalog provider for
SCUP/SCCM. I have about 19,000 active clients and I’m tired of patching 3rd
party apps via full app deployments. I’d love to hear about any experience
or suggestions any of you have.
