You will end up having to contact Microsoft to purchase an (incredibly 
expensive) custom support agreement. As part of that agreement, you will be 
required to commit to a plan to get off of that platform. If the business area 
is not willing to pay for the custom agreement, and they are not willing to pay 
for fixing the incompatibility, then unfortunately they need to be out of luck 
on this and the app should be retired.

Yes, but like others I have a couple PCs with vital apps that are incompatible 
with Windows 7/8.
And the software is not available for reinstall.

you do know that Windows XP is EOL in terms of support don't you ?

EOL of Support from Microsoft for Windows XP was on April 8th, 2014.
