But worst case, re-activation should be possible via the phone – we haven’t 
turned that off (yet).  You might need to end up speaking to a “real person” 
though, not the automated activation system.

Not sure what you expect here. Microsoft has made it well now for 5+ years that 
XP was not going to be supported beyond the date cited by Niall. Choosing to do 
nothing for 5 years, is well, you fill in the blank. And as Nash said, don’t 
expect Microsoft to be helpful without shelling out lots of cash.

Yes, but like others I have a couple PCs with vital apps that are incompatible 
with Windows 7/8.
And the software is not available for reinstall.

you do know that Windows XP is EOL in terms of support don't you ?

EOL of Support from Microsoft for Windows XP was on April 8th, 2014.
