I have actually been looking at the second link.  I am not on R2 SP1 but rather 
2012 SP2.   Versions match up as well, so I think I am good.  I will look at 
the first link also and see what I can find out.

No, it won’t touch those packages in SCCM.  You will need to create new 2013 U1 
packages.  Again, this way your existing task sequences remain working while 
you test with the new.

That makes sense.  How does this also effect the config manager integration and 
packages there?  Will it remove and recreate new ones when the integration task 
is ran?

Well, when you install 2013 U1 it will uninstall the older version.  It will 
not automatically upgrade your deployment share, so that can remain “as is” 
until you are ready to upgrade it.  This way if you want to create a new 
deployment share to test 2013 U1 first you can and your original boot images 
will still work with the original deployment share.

I am working on upgrading to MDT 2013 Update 1.  Do I have to uninstall the old 
version first or does it stay for use with my current images until I can redo 
them with 2013 U1?

Just wanted to confirm the option here.
