VAS does not replace KMS. It adds additional capabilities - e.g., AD based activation.

We will be doing an in-place update of that server to 2012 R2 tonight. I have never worked with KMS before as it is usually taken care of when I get to a customer site. I see that in 2012 R2 their is a new role, Volume Activation Services, that replaces KMS. When the server is updating to 2012 R2, will the update process automatically install the VAS role or will I need to manually install it? Is there anything else I need to consider before the update? Thanks Webster
