Our office did not have an issue with KMS after the 2008R2 upgrade to 2012R2 upgrade. But my associate just reminded me that KMS is always a little weird so take it for what it is worth.

Setup will see it there and add that role in during the upgrade process. We will be doing an in-place update of that server to 2012 R2 tonight. I have never worked with KMS before as it is usually taken care of when I get to a customer site. I see that in 2012 R2 their is a new role, Volume Activation Services, that replaces KMS. When the server is updating to 2012 R2, will the update process automatically install the VAS role or will I need to manually install it? Is there anything else I need to consider before the update?
