so I am an old geezer who thinks a listserv is old-fashioned, and is a newbie
to the group.
However, I actually have a lot of experience as one of the admins on the WSMC racers BBS, and I have installed all 3
popular BBSes.
*Skip if you are totally uninterested in this discussion-*
The advantage of BBSes as I see it:
proper timeline on discussion- with listservs people are always responding
without knowing what the latest post is
automatic archives, easy to make FAQ
easy to find info, though nobody ever searches :(
cutesy pix, which can be fun, or impossibly juvenile
inline links to pix are easy
fewer fat-finger errors among readers
threaded discussions
optional email for people who prefer it or have no browser
easier administration than MailMan, and uses web interface
lots of available add-ons to get more features
text formatting and emoticons
the advantages of listservs:
inertia
lack of pix ( some people like that better)
local archives
the dis-advantages of BBSes:
some administration functions are poorly handled ( phpBB )
more open to attack from spammers
? encourage chattiness over content ?

That forum bit? That's not ready for prime time yet.
You know how on EVDL every six months or so someone (usually a younger
member of the group) thinks the whole idea of an email listserv is old
fashioned
