I've never heard of regen capable controllers being less efficient. In fact
I would bet that the Sevcon controllers are very efficient. It would be
quite ironic if this were true.
I don't think you would get quite the same feeling as down shifting as the
mechanics are usually a bit different and you usually want to controller the
regen with some kind of variable controller device, often the throttle
itself, or integrated into the friction brake. I saw a guy who used plug
braking on his gocart. Plug braking is very much like regen although it
does not recharge the batteries. He had his throttle set up so that one
direction accelerated and the other provided braking. It worked quite well,
but was nothing like downshifting. Many golf carts and folk lifts use plug
braking, so if you have ever driven one of these, you can expect the same
type of dynamics from regen.

I'm not sure about Regen either, however i plan on
using in my next bike. another issue with Regen is
efficiency. I've heard that Regen controllers can be
5-10% less efficient than a non Regen?
I'm hoping that the Regen will provide the down
shifting feeling i use to get on my old sport bike.
