Go to the sharepoint site that you want to change, then go to:
1. Site Settings 2. Click Advanced Permissions 3. Click Settings 4. Choose Permission Levels 5. Click the group you want to edit 6. New Document and Edit Item are both actions that a user can perform when they are in that role. For example, anonymous users don't get those options. Hmmm . that doesn't work. I tried going direct via URL to 'upload.aspx' for the library but got Access Denied when uploading - presumably Read Only permissions blocked the upload. So what I need is the 'Contribute' configuration with 'New Document' removed from the list top menu and 'Edit Item' removed from the Item dropdown list.
