Hi Mitch

Thanks for your reply.

We have been using PTE to setup our custom template but can not see where to over-ride the fields you are talking about or which fields I should be updating.  Is there any documentation on the PTE that can detail which of these fields I am able to edit?

Also, I noticed that when trying to change one of the fields I got the following error (Note this is obviously validating against an existing Process Template.  Should I be creating one from scratch?):

Cheers

Hi Robert,

It is a bit heavy handed, but you can modify the process template so that it allows you to control those values up front. Once you have the data imported you just sent the process template back to the way it was. I’d recommend creating a test Team Project to try it on first, and use the Process Template Editor to save the current work item type definitions, and modify them:

Subject: [OzTFS] Over-riding values assigned by the workitem database for initial Data Migration

Hi Guys,

We (no, not a royal plural) are having an issue around initial data migration from our current Problem tracking system to TFS.  We are trying to:

  1. Export empty work item list from TFS to Excel
  2. Copy and Paste the relevant fields from our old system into this spreadsheet
  3. Publish all items back into TFS.

The issues lie in the fact that due to TFS validation we can not set certain fields to what we want them to by, ie: “Created by” and “Created Date” are not necessarily the person publishing the spreadsheet and now.  In trying to import our data these fields are either being validated against and blocked or overwritten by TFS.

Is there any way we can over-ride the values TFS is giving these values?  Fields in question are:

-          Created By

-          Created Date

-          Resolved Date

-          Closed Date

…and possibly more.

Any suggestions?
