Although I've never done this move myself, (as you say) it is a supported configuration. For others wanting to do this, this document is the one you need: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404854.aspx Some things to consider:

Remember that you need an additional TFS server license.

Try and keep the app-tier with the same name (see
