Hi Matthew,

I just install WiX 3.0 on the build server. That includes the targets
file. I also install WiX 3.0 on the dev machine which gives me wixproj
files (MSBuild format) and a good container in Visual Studio for wix
files. If I have to use any of the tools (dark etc) to reverse engineer
stuff I end up just copy and pasting in that code.

Hi Dave,

WRT building WiX projects with MS Build, I'm interested to know if you
use the Wix.Targets file to build the setup projects as referred to in
the following article?

Building with Wix.Targets

Good news! There are a few GUIs for WiX.

InstallAware have cool application called WixAware
(http://www.wixaware.com/) that provides a front end for creating WiX
deployment projects and merge modules. Version 1.1 is a little buggy and
only supports WiX 2.0. They have mentioned on their forums that WixAware
2.0 beta 1 will be available this week.

Also check out WixEdit: http://wixedit.sourceforge.net/

Automating the build of the WiX deployment projects can be performed
using Nant or MSBuild. It is a two step process of first calling
candle.exe <wixscript> and then linking all the bits with light.exe
<wixscript obj>

Cheers

Dave

I've used install shield, but was actually thinking of having a look at
wix. You can build the VS Setups with msbuild, but it's pretty nasty,
basically, you shell out the command line to devenv.exe with the correct
parameters to build the installer project. It's not nice, but it works.

Thanks

What are other people using to build setup.exe's and MSI's from their
Team Build servers?

We've been having some problems with the two current solutions from MS:

1. Visual Studio Setup & Deployment projects

a. Not supported by MSBuild. You have to do the <Exec> hack and
cross your fingers.

2. WiX projects

a. No GUI, Documentation & samples are thin.

Grant Holliday
