There is a new project, just released on CodePlex at
http://www.codeplex.com/MSBuildExtensionPack (and also at
www.MSBuildExtensionPack.com<http://www.msbuildextensionpack.com/>). MSBuild
Extension Pack an encompassing library of MSBuild tasks, and is a brainchild of
Mike Fourie, who blogs at
http://freetodev.spaces.live.com<http://freetodev.spaces.live.com/>, and for
the last year singlehandedly supported SDC tasks (which many of us undoubtedly
used) at CodePlex.

Mike has created new project based on his FreeToDev tasks suite (which was
running successful betas for the last few months); the new pack includes more
than 170 tasks in all imaginable areas and is notable for the following:

•

Exhaustive documentation (every task documented and has a sample script)

•

Single point of inheritance – all tasks inherit from the same base providing
improved error handling and remote execution support (where applicable)

•

Concept of TaskAction, allowing to provide several different functions in same
task (f. e. <Folder TaskAction=”Remove”> would remove a folder as compared with
<Folder TaskAction=”Rename”> renaming folder)

•

The package written for .NET 3.5

Those that used SDC tasks know, that there is lack of uniformity, large amount
of bugs and missing documentation; since Mike was the person dealing with bug
fixes and support for SDC, through his experience new package is mostly free of
these issues.

The big goal of MSBuild Extension Pack (and that’s why it was rebranded from
FreeToDev tasks suite) is to become the definite tasks package for MSBuild,
such that anyone with MSBuild in-house would use (and especially those just
starting on MSBuild). MSBuild engine is here to stay, especially with VC++ (and
perhaps the likes of BizTalk as well) projects supporting MSBuild format. At
this time MSBuild team at Microsoft has no plans to produce such definite tasks
library; and since Mike Fourie was by far most active person developing custom
MSBuild tasks for the last year or so we probably have a good chance of
achieving single definite task repository with MSBuild Extension Pack.
