It's true the QRI can be labor intensive, but you can cut some corners and 
still get reasonably accurate results.  If I know the student is at least at a 
first grade level, I'll start with the word list at first grade, and go until I 
get their instructional level for words in isolation (for those of you who are 
not familiar - we have the student read lists of words, about 25 or so, and see 
if they can read them fairly comfortably.  When they make 2-3 errors, we 
generally call that instructional level - that's a quick summary - that gives 
us a good level for a passage reading assignment).
   
  I generally just have them answer questions using the text in front of them - 
it's more "real life" - what they'd do in a class room, and less dependent on 
sheer memory.   How well can they find info in a reading situation?  That's 
what I want to know, anyway.  It speeds things up.  Takes about 20 min. per 
kid, though - I'll do the word list one day, the passage the next.  Amy
