One thng I did with the groups is to create a 'prop' for them to use while they
were book-talking. For example, I purchased rubber lizards to go with the
novel, 'Holes'. Then I taught the students that whoever was holding the yellow
spotted lizard was the only one who could talk in the group. If others talked
then points were taken from their individual job grade (30 points / job /
week). The kids loved the props. You could use toy airplanes for the book
"Hatchet" or whatever you can come up with. Of course I traveled all around
the room with a clipboard and the class list. They saw me checking things off
on the clipboard and thought I was noting infractions . . . I wasn't, but the
visual was quite effective. I would also join in on their discussions,
re-direct off task behavior and of course, remove students who just couldn't
participate appropriately.

Hope this helps,
Wendy
