We have TA's at my middle school.? We are fortunate in that we share several
acres of land with a high school and an elementary school.? 10-12th graders are
permitted (depending on grades & HS teacher recommendations) to sign up to work
as TA (teacher assistants).? It is the beginning of the school/work program,
where the students are required to work in an apprenticeship type situation
(for small pay & training).? However, often time, you'll have a former student
who wants to be helpful at the middle school level or is thinking of becoming a
teacher.? This allows them to earn an elective credit, get a behind the scenes
look, etc.? I am hoping to get a decent TA next year.? I had an awesome TA for
part of the year (she injured her knee badly playing soccer and couldn't make
the walk next door to the middle school & up the stairs and then back to the
high school without serious pain).? I sure missed Audrey when she was gone!

I use TA's to update bulletin boards (I hate doing 'em), make copies, file,
shared with other teachers, occasionally do tutoring with one or two students
who needed specific help.? They really help - it's almost as good as having a
secretary!

Last year I had two GATE 8th graders I selected to help me. Two periods a
day. Nothing fancy, and literally worked for peanuts! We call them TA"S
Sorry, should have clarified that.
