I am new to the listserv, but wanted to share what I do with my 8th grade
students and poetry that seems to have great results: Each spring (April is
sometimes too cold in NY but I try to make it coincide with poetry month) I
have students compose poems (in a workshop setting -- the only requirement
is to write about something that they care about and to draft) and then take
them outside to write the poems on the sidewalks surrounding our school.
They must attach their names, and then in collaboration with other grade
level teachers, younger students take time to go outside, read, and comment
on the poems. Students enjoy the public display, and seem to take a deeper
interest in the end result of their work when it is shared with so many --
including visitors to the school. Plus, they love the idea of using
sidewalk chalk and being "kids" again!
