The opening: For this assignment you are to ask your Mom, Dad, Grandparents or caregiver what their favorite song was when they were younger. (It must be someone who lived at a different time than you.) If they still have a recording of their favorite song, ask them to provide you with an audio file, CD tape (or even album) for us to play at school. If possible, please listen to the song with the person whom you chose to interview. Fill out the questionnaire provided and in turn you will fill out an additional one about YOUR favorite song at this point in your life and why it is your choice. Finally you and the person will compare your selections to find similarities and differences, as well as comment on the experience. Remember because this is a school assignment the lyrics must be appropriate for school use.
Soooo Okay, I am revamping this assignment to utilize the technology out there. My target is to help students learn how to utilize information obtained form an interview, research that infomation and show their learning through a electronic slide show. I also hope to help the kids bond over the wonderful venue of music with the person they interview. My 7th and 8th graders have laptops and my 6th graders have access to computers. I have a virtual classroom where items can be stored. I have decided to have them complete a Keynote/Power Point final. Help me out, what could I add? I currently have a questionnaire that I devised with another class a few years ago. At that time this was an essay assignment. Now I would like to use some pod/vod casting. My thoughts...A slide show with music, video and narration discussing the music, the time periods, how they compare and how they differ and how the experience affected the parties concerned. What do you think? Should I leave in the essay component and include it in the notes section? Should I have an alternative assignement for kids who may not like music...although I am quite sure I do not have anyone fitting that catagory I like to be prepared. Here is the essay component: Paragraph#1: Describe your task, the person you interviewed, what type of music they preferred, song title/musician(s)/time period of the song, and the general outcome of the interview (Interesting? Fun? Surprising? Inspiring?) Paragraph#2: Describe your musical tastes, what type of music you prefer, song title/musician(s)/time period of the song, Paragraph#3-Interviewee Info: Include the information about the song and the performers or band and important historical and /or cultural event about the time period. You may include something about fashion and societal trends from the time period if you and your interviewee whether historical events or current trends. Include at least 2 direct quotes. Example: My mother explained, " I thought the band "Tears for Fears' performed the song in way that said a lot to kids my age." Paragraph#4: Your Info: Include the information about the song and the performers or band and important historical and /or cultural event about the time period. You may include something about fashion and societal trends from the time period if you and your interviewee whether historical events or current trends. Paragraph#5 Discuss the similarities and differences between your own experience and your interviewee. Paragraph# 6 What insights have you gained from this experience? Are you more open to your interviewee's choices? Are they more open to your choices? Did you like the music? Are you willing to sit down and share music again sometime? _______________________________________________ The Literacy Workshop ListServ http://www.literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/lit_literacyworkshop.org.
