One possible possibility is ning.com - it's a free social networking site
where you can create your own social networks, making them private or
public as you see it. It could also be a great space for classes to
collaborate.

Any independent school educators on the list - http://isenet.ning.com is
pretty good group (homepages, messaging, blogs, groups, group discussions,
twittering, videos, photos, ...).
