I actually have more than I thought once I started looking, and I think
there's even another one or two at school in our 'coaches office." Here's
what I have. They're all a little different, and address different aspects
of coaching, as well as the different roles coaches take on in different
schools. For example, I can work with kids while our Reading First coaches
cannot, and in some areas, teachers are required to meet with coaches, ours
aren't. I also don't do any kind of administrative-type observing, although
I will if the teacher asks. I put them in order of how helpful they've been
to me:
Becoming a Literacy Leader by Jennifer Allen
Responsive Literacy Coaching by Cheryl Dozier
Literacy Coaching: A handbook for School leaders by Dale Moxley and
Rosemarye Taylor
Literacy Coaching: The Essentials by Katherine Casey
The Literacy Coach's Survival Guide by Cathy Toll
One thing I can say in all sincerity from my time in this role is that
coaches should "advertise" the help they can offer, but should wait to be
approached by the teacher before sending material, etc. Unsolicited emails
of materials, resources, etc., are rarely appreciated and frequently
resented by staff. Sometimes it's really difficult to hold back when you
have a better idea that will help the kids, but coaches have to keep telling
themselves that they're there for the staff....and that can be frustrating,
too. I think the best coaching situation is the one my math colleague has
who teaches part of the day and coaches the other part. (I'm a fulltime
coach and have been trying to re-negotiate my schedule without success! I've
even gone so far as to try to initiate a job-share with another teacher
interested in literacy coaching, but it doesn't look likely for next year.)
Good luck!
