1. Reverse the process. Have them create sentences or passages with
challenging words and require them to add context clues that would help
the reader understand the challenging word.

2. Take some simple passages and change one of the words to another
language, ie French, Spanish, or even a nonsense word. Have them try to
determine the meaning based on the English portion (context clues). 

Example: I can't believe they put "fromage" on my burger again. I told
them I'm allergic to dairy products. 

Hope these can help. On the bright side, however, at least you have
students who are willing to look up the words in the dictionary. Many of
mine won't even bother to do that.

Hi -- Does anyone have any great ideas how to explain to 7th graders
about figuring our context clues to understand vocab?  My kids want to
immediately turn to the dictionary which of course interrupts their
comprehension.  Although there is a time for dictionary look ups, I need
to give some direct lessons in context.  Thanks,
