I agree with Lorri--it helps to push kids towards exploring perspective and
voice. We have started to explore this issue with our fourth graders across
the district by beginning with a discussion narration--is the storytelling
lens within the story or coming from an outside position? We link it first
to the voice of narration (1st person, 3rd, person--even a bit of
exploration of 2nd person) and then begin to look closely at first person.
Is the voice that of the author (memoir, personal story, personal essay), or
is the author assuming the role of a character? Which character? How is
that character developed--what clues are left for the reader so that we can
piece together character (infer) when storytelling gets beyond 'Hi, my name
is Emily Elizabeth'? And how would the story change if another character
were telling it? It is a enjoyable unit to teach and it definitely pushed
thinking.
