I use any of the Franklin books to teach theme, Pain and the Great One to
teach point of view, Tacky the Penguin books to teach conflict (and  being
"different) Chicken Soup for theme and conflict (difficult for middle
schoolers to find theme, these really help!) You Are Special for author's
purpose,  and Chocolate Moose for Dinner for figurative language. More
later!
