Hi,
I am a newer older teacher and was afraid I would gain weight like so many
others I met.
So now that I have been teaching for three years....I have only gained 2
pounds and it could be muscle since I lift weights twice a week. A few
things I did to help me with middle aged spread....I deinstalled the printer
in my room so I have to print up in the office (or library or computer lab).
The office is a longer walk.
Then I bought a pedometer and often wear it. It encourages me to keep
walking and many days in middle school I clock 5 miles at school between the
office, checking the students up and down the aisles, walking from my far
parked car,...etc.
I also bought a small fridge and keep energy drinks, cold water,
yogurt--smart snacks in my room.
Sometimes (rarely, really) I give out candy to my 8th grade aides. I NEVER
buy chocolate since I would eat it. So I buy sweet/sour candy, brands I
would never be tempted to eat as a small reward for aides and not for me.
One thing I would like help on is to get more energized around 2:30-3 so I
purposely leave school and hit the gym or take a walk on the way home. Any
ideas you have to motivate those of us who are emotionally or mentally tired
would be greatly appreciated. I physically can do it, just often I turn my
car in the "home" direction instead. I also need to drink more water during
the day but hold back due to lack of breaks, coverage, etc. Looking forward
to ideas you have....

Dear Literacy Teachers;
Are you excited about the New Year ahead or worried about how you will
manage the many demands placed on you at school and home?
I am writing to let you know about a book that may help you balance your
work and personal life and find time for yourself as well. This book is
being developed with input from teachers like you, who live the challenges
and have developed helpful tips and strategies to address them. Please
consider emailing me your ideas about the challenges you face and/or any
helpful tips you have to share with other teachers. In return, I will email
you my article on *Fitting exercise into your day: Ten tips for
teachers*and I will consider your ideas for inclusion in the book.
You can email your thoughts to me at [email protected]. Be sure to
include your name, position, and city/state if you would like to be credited
in the book or a chosen pseudonym if you prefer to remain anonymous. Below
you will find the proposed outline for the book's Table of Contents.
I look forward to hearing from you!
