Good morning,

I'm a new subscriber to the list. I spent some time this morning reading through archives to familiarize myself with past discussions.

I'm tribally enrolled at Nambe Pueblo in northern NM. A former schoolteacher, I am currently on the faculty in American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois. My PhD is in Education.

I study the ways that American Indians are portrayed in children's and YA books, lesson plans, curricular materials, pop culture and so on.

As a former teacher, I know that teachers spend their own money on professional development, and I know how precious time is. Though I publish in journals and books, I wanted to get research and writing on this topic out of the 'academy' and into the hands of teachers, parents, and librarians who work with children on a day-to-day basis. Hence, I created a resource called American Indians in Children's Literature. I will forewarn you, that most of what's published now and in the past, is highly problematic. On my site, you'll see lot of critical (and sometimes snarky) writing about classics such as LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, or newer books like I AM APACHE. I've got essays about THE EDUCATION OF LITTLE TREE, and picture books you can use to examine perspective and bias (example of that is Susan Jeffers BROTHER EAGLE SISTER SKY).

Please do take a look. I hope that the site proves useful. It's been live since 2006. I post new material about three times a week. Site visits are over 400,000. I've got book reviews, but also links to extended articles (all free, full text) on this topic.

The site address is:
americanindiansinchildrensliterature.net

Sincerely,
Debbie Reese
