Hi! There is a bit of strong language in the first chapter, but I am about to teach "The Bean Trees" for the second time in my career to a 7th grade class. I specifically checked with parents five years ago on whether or not the book was appropriate, and everyone approved. Though it's not the main focus of the book, the first chapter makes it very clear that the protagonist is deliberately choosing not be "barefoot and pregnant" even as most of the girls around are dropping out of school left and right.
