I love that people are suggesting translating OSGeo-Live documentation,
and I actually think it is achievable for Intergeo if you have a couple
of dedicated translators.
Talking about schedule:
Our driver for creating the latest English documentation will always be
the FOSS4G conference, and based on human tendencies we will always be
getting our English documentation at the last minute before printing,
without time for translation for foss4g. (This will be the case for the
2011 FOSS4G, being in the English speaking USA.)
Once we have the FOSS4G version cut (around 4 weeks before foss4g), we
can then hand the documentation over to translators.
There are 43 projects, each having a 1to 2 page project overview, plus
15 or so standard overviews. Maybe 100 pages in total, 60 pages if just
translating the project overviews.
If very keen, translators can also take on the quickstarts, but that
will be much more work.
The good thing about the documentation is that we can run the
documentation install script by itself, applied to a prior release, in
order to update just the translated documentation.
So for the 4.0 release, if we can find someone to translate ~ 60 project
overviews to German in the next 4 weeks, then we could create a
4.0_german release before Integeo.

Hi Astrid,
I agree that the Geoserver directory structure as Jody proposed should
work well.
In my opinion it would be worth to try to translate at least the basic
documentation. If a few people do this together it shouldn't take too much
time. Does the LiveDVD for Intergeo have any fix deadline?
The Intergeo will be 5.-7. October 2010
(http://www.intergeo.de/de/deutsch/index.php)
So it would be quite sportiv to get the german version till then. I think
we are fine for this year to provide the english version.
There is still the job to do to get some hundred dvd printed and so on.
There will be a presentation part on Intergeo where we could present the
project and show the slides from Cameron. There is not so much text and
the presentation could be in german
Personally I
will spend this week plenty of hours in the airplane from Osaka via
Bangkok to Munich and could start already with translating. Except you
say it's definitely too late for this year already.
Daniel
I would guess it is already too late. But maybe Cameron and the packaging
team have to decide this.
Anyway you already could do the translations for the next version.
Have a good flight.

Hi,
it would be great if we could provide the LiveDVD in different
languages. We plan to take the LiveDVD to the Intergeo which is a big
fair but mostly with german speaking visitors. It won't work out to get
a german version for 2010, but maybe we can provide it for next year.
Maybe most documents could be translated from people from the projects
themselves (this would be possible at least for german). For german
translations I also can ask people from the FOSSGIS e.V. (german
speaking local chapter of the OSGeo).
I agree with the data structure Jody suggested.

For geoserver we ended up with duplicating the docs in different svn
trees (using the iso language name as the directory):
You can see the result here:

I agree with many of the goals. It's long been on my list to get
the language switcher like the normal ubuntu disk has right at
boot.
You can easily switch the default language and keyboard setting
by hand right before building the iso.
Now that we have rst based docs
+1 on translating the docs (the how to change language/keyboard
would be the best one to start with) +1 on translating menus if
they need it (note the ubuntu menus already
are translated for the most part) - Encouraging the translation of
OSGeo apps to the same list of
languages (list might need some adjustment) we've included. +1

Sorry I won't be there in Barcelona but don't let that stop you
from talking about it.
Thanks,
Alex
Hi Alex,
I agree. The main work would be translating.
Unfortunately Sphinx doesn't support multilingual documents. I
looked for this a few weeks ago already. So probably at first we
need to agree on some guideline and naming convention for localized
documentation, and we could think about how to inform translators
about changes and updates of the original files. The latter is a
common problem of translated documents. Daniel
