Just as a note - JAI is not only used by the server software. I think I
am safe when I say that all desktop GIS use JAI as well (for sure
OpenJUMP and gvSIG).
I think the only alternative would be to switch to imagej (or was there
another one?)... however, that may mean a lot(!) of re-writing?
I just checked on the live-dvd - OJ developer discussions long time ago,
and we (OpenJUMP) use a JAI version that allows re-distribution of the
binaries. We use/ship JAI version 1.1.2_01
cheers,
stefan

Version 1.1.4? Really weird, that was never released by Sun/Oracle.
GeoTools and family use 1.1.3
http://download.java.net/media/jai/builds/release/1_1_3/LICENSE-jai.txt
Is the license the same?
Odd that it's brought up now, GeoTools and GeoServer have been using
those packages
for something like 10 years...
