I honestly thing that more bandwidth is taken up the other way because in order to make it easy to reply to the list most people hit reply to all. As more people get involved in the thread the reply to all list grows and now you are sending messages to the list and 10 other people. I think for the most part any thread that is on topic should be going to the list because many people are interested in what the response to questions are. Also someone may want to find that information later in the archives. The senders name is always in the message headder and I would encourage people to send messages directly to the sender if they are of no interest to the list.
