Thanks to everyone for the info on storing NiCads. It is rather difficult to do 
a google search from an internet cafe using a 386 with a slow land line.
 
All advice says store them charged. But I distinctly remember reading the 
instructions for my Sony video battery 'store discharged!'   I'll do more 
reasearch when I get home to N.A.
 
Tip;  I stored some regular AAA's with masking tape wound around the batteries 
(top to bottom) so the contacts wouldn't touch each other or other (metal) 
objects ... and discharge,
 
After 6 months, all the batteries with masking tape were discharged. All the 
loose batteries with no tape (on a box) were fully charged. Same battery, same 
age, same condition. Must have discharged through the tape
