I probably should have added:

Two times I have had a battery explode.

The first as a teenager I was charging a battery and disconnected the clip
from the battery charger without shutting if off and allowing the gasses to
clear. The caps on all three cells (6VDC) blew off and made a small mess.

The second time was aboard Bandersnatch I had hooked my (then) gas engine
driven welder to the start battery to help start the main engine. After I
started the main engine I had to disconnect the welder and realized that
whether or not the welder was running there would be a spark when I made
the disconnect so I was ready for the explosion. It blew the cap off the
nearest cell only but I was as far away as I could be.
