By coincidence, I noticed that the February issue of "Physics Today" (I know, not on everyone's reading table) there is an article written by Byron Anderson, Chair of the physics department at Kent State (and a sailor - and perhaps on this list) entitled "The Physics of Sailing". It's a fairly easy and interesting read in itself, but, germane to the "lift" thread, he references the NASA website "http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/lift1.html " that discusses the correct and incorrect theories of lift. My read of what's written here - lift comes from the redirection of momentum of the fluid flowing past the foil. The foil can be almost any shape that redirects the fluid - flat plate (keel), airfoil, sail, whatever. Hal
