While I cannot officially agree with you 100%, since my vessel has no sails, I cannot speak from experience, so I cannot present much of an argument.
The only thing I can think of is that an airplane wing has a bottom that the air can push against, while the sail does not have an equilibrate surface, only the backside of the "top" surface and I imagine that makes a difference.
