You have reached a point where you must ask yourself the question.
What costs are you prepared to pay for the comfort of feeling secure?
I deliberately say "feeling secure" not "being secure".
The reality is you cannot really guarantee security. Nor can you truly close
your borders.
The ancient Chinese tried it with a physical wall and failed. Modern Chinese
communism also tried - and failed.
What makes the US govenment think they can do it with bureaucracy?
so far every attempt to do social engineering with bureaucracy has
eventually failed.
So why pay such a high cost for the illusion of "feeling secure"?
Is the illusion really worth it?
You may feel secure from the enemy without, but what about the enemy
within??
Despite it's total power over the known world, the Roman Empire still fell.
And it was as much the enemy within that proved the undoing, as any outside
barbarian hordes pressing against the borders.
I see a lot of parallels between the old Roman Empire and the modern US
Republic. ( moving towards empire status as we speak)
A wise man said. Those who cannot remember the past are bound to repeat it.
If this trend continues sailors will discover they have lost the freedom of
the seas.
Liveaboards will discover they have lost the option of alternative
lifestyles.
Non conformity gas always had a price in terms of being viewed slightly
askance.
The moribound land-lubbers view our alternative lifestyle with a mix of
suspicion and envy.
give them half a chance and they will deprive you of it.

Arild
