It is very easy and cheap to install a circuit that will totally protect
the alternator, regulator, and devices connected to them from over
voltages, transients, and spikes from the alternator and other sources.
The only qualifier is that the protective circuit is designed for
alternators that use external regulators, which is many if not most high
power boat set ups.
I have the schematic and am willing to send it to anybody who wants a
