Some agencies require a "certificate of origin" which starts with the manufacturer and subsequent owners down the line and a bill of sale from you. If the boat has been registered previously, all of this info should be available, maybe not easily, but available.

I know he sailed it in the US for a month then laid it up here for the winter before he set sail. I really don't think he had a clue about having the paperwork in order as this was the first boat he owned and was probably lucky he wasn't boarded as an alien without a cruising permit while here.
