Two other more expensive candidates are the
Brompton and the Bike Friday.

The first is a very good UK bike with built in
suspension.

The last is a line of innovative performance
folders (they can tow the bike case as a trailer),
the touring or racing models would be suitable for
long distance fast riding over varied terrine.

Don't forget the single most important thing for
efficiency and comfort over a longer distance is
proper fit (NOT achieved with cheap bikes) and
next most important is weight. Both make much more
of a difference than you would believe if you did
not know, but then again how many would try for
commuting by running in heavy ill fitting leather
boots?
